Jesse Helms – A Retrospective

Friday, July 4th, 2008

In the course of my preparation for the John Bolton interview, the name Jesse Helms recurs. It was then Senator Helms (R,NC), who demanded the United States withhold it’s portion of United Nations “dues” unless and until much needed reforms proved forthcoming. Eventually, the “dues” were reinstated but not the much needed reforms. Helms’ passing is a timely reminder of this fact; who will take up the cudgels for U.N. reform (an oxymoron perhaps?) now?

John Thompson – President of SUDS Diving

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I recently had the opportunity to interview John Thompson, president of SUDS Diving. SUDs stands for Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba. It’s conducted at Walter Reed Hospital and is designed to assist returning veterans injured in Afghanistan and Iraq with their rehabilitation. The organization is a 501 (c3) charity that puts the contributions it receives to good, practical use. On an individual level, I feel good about this group because it gives me a way to support the troops when and where they most need it: when they return home from duty. We will interview Mr. Thompson again in June.

Harvard University as Welfare Supplicant

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

The spectacle of a Harvard University president begging for government handouts is just too much! Harvard University’s endowment is approaching $35 billion (thats BILLION with a b) dollars, the largest of its kind in the country, if not the world. Moreover, Harvard University, like other “non-profit” organizations, is not required to pay taxes of any kind. Therefore, the spectacle of Harvard as a beneficiary of government handouts of any kind is more than offiensive. It’s symptomatic of what’s wrong with this country’s fiscal priorities.

The “National Conversation on Race” Goes Like This:

Let’s Not, and Say We Did – New York Times. The Bottom Line Radio expanded view:

1) Education, education, education. Those who find themselves on the outside looking in tend to be frightfully undereducated relative to those who are “affluent”. Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and Indian immigrants, are among those who come to the United States “on the outside looking in” and emerge on the affluent side. These groups also tend to pursue quality education AGGRESSIVELY.

2) Marriage first, children and parenthood later. There is overwhelming empirical evidence to support the fact that unwed parenthood is nearly perfectly positively correlated to poverty. It’s hard to aggressively pursue a quality education while simultaneously raising children, particularly as a single parent.

3) Learn Manners. Never forget the importance of Yes, No, Please, Thank You. These words, sincerely uttered, can work wonders, even when all else has apparently failed.

4) Eliminate political correctness. It insults people’s intelligence, fans the flames of animosity, and perpetuates resentment among groups.
